Grilled Hot Dog Skewers

Grilled Hot Dog Skewers

When it comes to a cookout, what says “summer” more than grilled hot dogs? They’re quick and easy, they’re delicious, and they’re great for grilling at home or taking to make on the go if you’re getting out to enjoy the great outdoors on a summer camping trip, no complicated cooking necessary. But this isn’t a recipe for just regular franks over a fire, whether you’re outdoors or at home, that’s no excuse to skip great flavor so this week we made the best Halal hot dog and veggie skewers that we definitely think you’ll need this summer!

Before we get into the skewers themselves, let’s start with the different sauces we made to bring some different flavor options to these skewers. We made a sweet tangy BBQ that was mostly a classic BBQ sauce taste but with a few other simple ingredients like ketchup and soy sauce, this was the simplest sauce but still had a nice mild flavor. The other two sauces were more complex as they need to simmer in a pan, but it was worth it because they were delicious. If you plan on taking this recipe camping, these sauces can be made ahead of time and kept in a cooler until you’re ready to use them.

The first was a Carolina mustard barbecue sauce that was surprisingly tasty. The combination of tangy mustard and sweet honey are enhanced with a little bit of spice to create a flavor explosion. If you’re a fan of honey mustard, this version may become your new go to. We made enough to have extra and I can confirm that it works not only as a grill-able glaze, but it also tastes delicious on sandwiches and wraps.

The final sauce, and I saved the best for last as this was my personal favorite, was a blueberry barbecue sauce that was the real star of the show. It was simple combo of fresh blueberries mixed with a few other ingredients and the result is incredible, all these sauces have that classic barbecue tanginess, but I think this blueberry sauce was the perfect mix of sweet and savory. I thought this sauce was good by itself before we’d even added it to the skewers, so we knew we were in for a treat when this was done.

And speaking of skewers, it’s time we get into the meat of this recipe, pun intended. These are what you might expect from a grilled skewer, tasty chunks of meat with a few veggies throughout, and it’s much the same for this except we used a few different flavors of Halal franks. Just like with the sauces, we wanted to give you options to choose from, so we made an assortment of skewers using Halal hot links, campfire grillers, and jumbo chicken franks all with chunks of green and red pepper, red onion, and pineapple for the rest of the skewer. We had plenty of skewers with each flavor of frank, so we had a lot of opportunities to try them with the different sauces and experiment with different flavor combinations. A personal favorite of mine was the blueberry barbecue sauce on the jumbo chicken frank, or the hot link combined with the sweet and tangy Carolina mustard was a close second. And because these use franks instead of chunks of raw meat, they cook on the grill in no time, just give it a few flips on each side to let the links heat through and the veggies get tender and you’re good to go!

That’s all there is too it, just some franks, veggies, and a quick trip to a hot grill (or campfire) and you’ve got quick and tasty skewers perfect for enjoying the summer weather, and with these sauce options, you can’t go wrong. That’ll do it for this weeks recipe, we’re hoping you give it a try and share it with someone that would enjoy it with you, you’ll have plenty of skewers to go around after all, otherwise we hope to see you next week when we bring you another great Halal recipe!

  3. Assemble the ingredients in a mixing bowl and mix until smooth, set aside until use.
  4. Roughly chop the onions, pepper, and franks into roughly 1 inch pieces. If you’re using wood skewers, soak them in water to prevent them burning on the grill.

  6. Grill the skewers, flipping after a couple minutes until franks are heated through and the veggies are tender. Remove from heat, serve, and enjoy.
