Cozy and Flavorful Salisbury Steak

Cozy and Flavorful Salisbury Steak

When you’re in need of a delicious dinner and want to change up the usual ground beef or burger recipe, look no further than this deliciously comforting Salisbury steak recipe! It’s got all the tender Halal beef you love, mixed up with the perfect blend of spices, and served with a homemade gravy for the ultimate comfort food dinner.

If you aren’t familiar with Salisbury steak, think of it kind of like a meatloaf, but served in delicious patty form. It has savory spices like garlic and onion powder mixed in along with the breadcrumbs that help make these kinds of recipes so hearty and filling but formed into convenient lil’ burger shapes.

With any recipe that involves mixing your spices in, it’s always handy to take a little chunk off and pan fry it to test how the finished product will taste before you commit. We ended up adding a little bit more of each seasoning to ours, but this is a safe way of adjusting the seasoning to your personal taste, so don’t be afraid to adjust and make this your own!

Speaking of pan frying, don’t you just love when a recipe this tasty and complete can be made in just one pan?  You’ll pan fry the steaks as well as the veggies, and eventually everything needed for the gravy in a large pan, with only the need to add things and remove them from the pan as they finish. But back to the meat of the matter, when the patties are cooked on both sides with a nice dark crust, you’re good to remove them. They’ll likely be cooked thoroughly through the middle, but they’ll go back in the pan later to simmer in the gravy, so they can finish cooking then if needed.

When you do start building the gravy, it’s always a matter of patience to get the consistency right, like any good homemade gravy or sauce. It’s a blend of tasty sliced onion with a blend of seasonings, along with flour mixed in to form the base, and Halal beef stock added in batches and simmered until nice and smooth. I say patience is ket, because we need a smooth sauce, but adding the liquid in batches is always a lil time consuming but, worth it in the end.

Adding the broth too quickly without letting the onion and flour absorb the liquid as you go is how you end up with a lumpy sauce, and ain’t nobody want a bumpy sauce!

This being a Halal recipe, we also needed a substitution for the red wine that’s often used in Salisbury steak gravy, but we’ve got you covered. Adding pomegranate juice with just a bit of white vinegar is the perfect substitution for the wine when you need the fruity tanginess it would otherwise bring to the sauce.

When the gravy is nice and smooth, mix in the golden-brown mushrooms you cooked to perfection earlier along with the steaks to heat back up then you’re all set to dive in! This gravy is awesome with the Salisbury steak, and nothing goes better with both of these quite like some homemade mashed potatoes so you can find our recipe for those here.

We hope you’re hungry, because when this recipe is complete there is so much to love. The Salisbury steak is flavorful and tender, and the gravy is hot, comforting and full of savory veggies that are perfect with the steaks. And both of course are seasoned to perfection and make for the ultimate comfort food dinner that you and the whole family will love.
