Meaty and Cheesy Homemade Lasagna

Lasagna: A Worldwide Favorite, Made at Home

Let’s talk lasagna. With its layers of melty cheese, meaty filling, and tender pasta, there’s a lot to love about this Italian classic that’s become a favorite dish worldwide. Dishes like this are made even better when made from the comfort of your kitchen so you can enjoy the aromas of home cooking, before settling down for a quality meal. This lasagna recipe is done in a few easy steps, so you can skip to the “enjoying a quality homecooked meal” part in no time!

The Secret Lies In The Sauce

Before you get to layering the lasagna, you need to prepare a few of the fillings that will make this so deliciously meaty and cheesy, starting with the meat sauce. We used Halal ground beef from Midamar, cooked in a large pot with a diced yellow onion, and seasoned with the classics like salt, pepper, and of course, Italian seasoning. When the beef is browned and seasoned to perfection, you’re ready to mix in the sauce.

We mixed in a premade tomato sauce instead of making the entire sauce from scratch, this is still meant to be a quick and convenient recipe, after all. After the sauce is mixed, bring it to a light simmer and you’ll have a nice, thick meat sauce that’s practically begging to be enjoyed. Be sure to give this a taste for yourself and season to your taste before removing it from heat to cool a bit before assembly.

A deliciously Smooth and Cheesy Filling

While the meat sauce cools, it’s a great opportunity to mix the cheese filling to complete the preparation. It’s a simple blend of ricotta with some other savory favorites like parsley, salt, and mozzarella cheese. This doesn’t require any cooking, so just mix it all together into a smooth spread in a mixing bowl and you’re all set to start building the lasagna.

Some Assembly Required

Now for the most complicated part of the recipe, and it’s still very simple. In a large baking dish, lay out a smooth layer of meat sauce over the bottom, followed by a layer of dry lasagna noodles. Some use par cooked noodles in their recipes, but this has plenty of time to bake and will make those noodles nice and tender. Spread the cheese filling over the noodles, and just repeat these steps until you run out of ingredients or the dish is full, simple as that! But as good as this would be right now, it isn’t complete with a layer of golden brown and melty cheese over top, so we added a nice layer of shredded mozzarella and parmesan over top. As always, it’s best to use freshly shredded cheese rather than pre-shredded to ensure it all melts evenly, instead of melting into loose strands of cheese.

Cover this dish in foil, spraying the underside with non-stick spray, and take it for a quick trip to a hot oven. After a while it’s nice and melty and should be hot throughout, but if you remove the foil and finish baking for a few minutes, it’ll give you a great layer of perfectly melted and slightly crispy cheese over top. This adds a little bit of a more robust texture to what is otherwise a very soft dish.

  • 2 tbsp parsley
  • ¼ cup shredded parmesan
  • 1 ½ cups freshly shredded mozzarella
  • 1 egg
  • ½ tsp salt

Directions

  1. In a large pot over medium heat, begin cooking the beef until it starts to brown, then mix in the onion and 2-3 tbsp Italian seasoning, until the onion begins to soften.
