Chicken Fried Chicken is a delicious comfort food classic that always satisfies, especially with a plate of mashed potatoes and veggies for a complete and tasty meal. But what are you to do when you’re craving this classic, but don’t want to worry about deep frying? Try this quick and easy chicken hack using Halal chicken patties instead!
When you’re in need of delicious breaded chicken, these chicken patties are always the perfect choice; and when they save you time before you’re enjoying a delicious meal, they taste even better. Personally, as much as I love fried food, doing it at home is an oily nightmare that leaves your house stinking like oil long after you’re done. So being able to just air fry these patties is a game changer.
We served these patties over homemade mashed potatoes and gravy, so that’s really what most of this recipe entails. Boiling chopped potatoes until they soften is a great chance to work on other parts of this recipe, so while those cook, you can make the gravy and stay efficient.
A good gravy always starts with a good roux, and it can be intimidating to make if you aren’t familiar. It requires a little bit of patience, but the results are always worth it. A mix of butter, flour, and small batches of chicken stock mixed together in a pan makes a decadently smooth and savory gravy that’s perfect for serving over top of this chicken.
Whisking small batches of the stock is the secret to the smooth texture, just like whisking small batches of cream into a roux is the secret to a smooth cheese sauce for example. The butter and flour combine to make a clumpy brown mess in the pan, and small batches of the stock break it up into a smooth gravy as it simmers. If you add the stock too quickly, they won’t incorporate correctly and it’ll have lumps of flour, and nobody wants a lumpy gravy.
When it looks smooth and ready to go over some potatoes, give it a season and taste to adjust. We kept it simple with some garlic powder, salt, and pepper but there’s all sorts of savory seasonings you can sprinkle in here to get it how you like.
By the time the gravy’s ready, the potatoes are probably soft, so they just need to go into a stand mixer with some butter and milk until they’re nice and smooth. Taste test these too to adjust your seasonings and you’re all set.
Serve the chicken over the potatoes and top it all with plenty of your gravy, toss in a package of Sno Pac green beans and you’ve got a full meal here, folks. This is perfect for busy nights, doesn’t make many dishes to clean up later, and makes plenty for you and the family to enjoy. As delicious as crispy fried chicken can be, sometimes it pays off to keep it simple with a food hack like this because this whole meal was awesome.
